In case of a severely compromised corneal epithelium, particularly in patients with ABMD (loose epithelium), surgical debridement is sometimes performed in the expectation that the epithelium will grown back in a more normal condition.
There are several ways to perform debridement (also called superficial keratectomy), which is basically the same as the first step in a PRK procedure (removal of the epithelium). It can be removed manually, it can be removed with alcohol and it can be removed with an excimer laser.
